The Ikea charger I mentioned is not a poorly made charger. The thing to do is to look for good quality cables. The cables that tend to break most often are Apple iPhone cables. I've never broken a microUSB cable even when using my Reader while charging.
I don't buy no name USB chargers. So I'm pretty safe in that regard. I have a Sony charger, a nook charger, Apple iPhone & ipad chargers, and iKea, and some USB ports in a power cube as well as the USB ports from the laptop and the USB port on the Surface Pro 2 and the power supply has a USB port. I think I'm pretty well set for USB ports for charging.
