Same in France. I've been a client of Amazon.com for years (long before I had a reader), and always explored several Amazon sites (French, German, Spanish, Italian and American) for hard to find or expensive items (port included). When Amazon opened the French site for kindle books, I refused (and have to keep refusing) to move to the French site, which I can still use for everything but kindle books.
For ebooks, I've added Kobo, Feedbook, ebook.de and ebook.com to my comparison list.
French book and ebook prices are determined by their publisher, so there is rarely a difference between sites - I do continue to read French books as well as foreign ones.
Re India, I remember on my only trip to India (just 3 days on business), I went to a bookshop to explore Indian contemporary literature, and found that Penguin India had many books not available in Europe - and much cheaper.
PS: Amazon.com is especially useful for those ebooks American publishers refuse to sell to us French - I never understood why.
