I'm going to add to the anecdotal evidence.
I've only ever had one Audible account, tied to my Amazon account, and in fact I don't think it would be ethical to keep opening new accounts to take advantage of promotions. However, the nuisance also wouldn't be worth it to me; I invariably listen to my Audible content on the Audible app, and I want to see my entire library at once and not have to do a sign-in, sign-out dance.
I've had a good run lately with promotions; I think I'm in my ninth month at the free or trivial outlay level and I've got another two-month promo I'll be signing up for later this month. That said, I've also had long fallow periods when the promos didn't work. No issue with that. Not a difficult decision for me, as I generally see very little in Audible sales that appeals.
I'd only go Light if I had a ton of credits I wanted to protect rather than squander them on books of limited interest so I could quit, but it's definitely a YMMV issue.
