Just in case it was not obvious, then the cover.jpg and metadata.opf files are typically duplicates of what is in the book format file (as long as the format in question supports this).

The cover.jpg is stored separately for use both by the Calibre GUI and for formats that do not support embedded covers.

The metadata.opf is a duplicate of the information stored in the `Calibre database for the book. It can be used if the database ever gets corrupted to automatically rebuild its contents.

The other point is that if you ever change the cover or metadata after loading the book into Calibre the information embedded in eBook format files is not updated until you take one of a number of specific actions (convert/export (save to disk)/polish) on the book.
