What is now called "sleep" mode seems to be what was originally called "suspend" mode. The original estimates from iRex were that suspend mode would triple battery life (i.e. up to 24 hrs if you got 8 hrs before). Note that this may still only be a maximum of 8 hrs reading time, depending on whether suspend mode can help while reading or not. The Automatic Shutdown preserves battery life, at the expense of a full reboot next time you use it. There was originally going to be a true "sleep" mode, offering ~50 days of battery life with a ~10s wake up time. I don't know if that is still in iRex's plans. See
