@snoozer - if dwig's 'install a new copy' suggestion resolves the problem, you might want to also replace the Calibre Settings folder in the new install with the one from the old install. It has global customisations, tweaks, any plugins and associated configurations, mru lists etc etc.

Where exactly is Portable installed. If it's in %systemdrive%\Program Files or %systemdrive%\Program Files (x86) then that's probably not a good idea - those folders 'belong' to the Windows Installer. IMO its better to keep portable programs in a separate folder, I keep all mine in %systemdrive%\Portables.

I've come across various problems when other portable programs have been installed in one of Windows Installer's folders - Peazip and Rapid Environment Editor are two I can remember. System owners have often told me, 'But it's been there for years.', to which I reply, 'I know, but Windows Installer works in mysterious ways, so its best to keep out of its way.'
