If it's any help, I'm in a similar boat to you. I live in Texas. My Nook ST died and I wasn't happy with the current Nook (the Nook Glowlight, with the microscopic amount of room to sideload) or Kindle, and no one around here has any Kobos on display since Borders closed. So I took a gamble and ordered an Aura off of eBay.
Kobo is a computer nerd's dream as far as being able to hack this and that to change things. But you don't *need* to do any of that for a fine reading experience.
As others have said, you can adjust fonts and margins in any book. I do and all of mine are sideloaded.
As for book purchases, I've stopped purchasing from B&N and have never bought a book from Kobo. I buy from Amazon and convert and I have not had any experiences with conversion hosing layout or TOC. I do purchase lots of indie and small press books and have seen a few where those things were bad out of the box, but I couldn't blame conversion for those problems. Of course, that's just my experience, so take it with a grain of salt.
And yes, long pressing on a book in your library will bring up a details screen with summary.
If you like the idea of Kobo but are nervous about spending money on it sight unseen, you could buy the older Kobo Aura. It fits all your requirements but screen size and has the same resolution as your old Sony. You can buy one for $50 off of eBay
here. I've bought one and so have a couple of other folks here. Very nice device, though the screen isn't as nice as the H20.
If you do wind up getting a Kobo, head over to the Kobo section. You can change just about anything if there's something you don't like about it.
