Generally speaking, I completely agree with you. When it comes to books with non-Roman characters, though, Mobi has an issue in that it's up to the reader to have a font installed which contains the appropriate characters. With PDF, you can embed the needed font in the document and hence avoid the problem.

For books in languages that use the Roman alphabet then I'm completely in agreement with you - Mobi has many benefits over PDF in terms of being able to easily change the font size, look up words in a dictionary, and so on.
