Or at least they tend to have self-contained stories within each series, so it doesn't (often, at least) end in mid-story. Happens occasionally, though . The most recent example I can think of is an outstandingly dreadful SF series called "Outcasts" which ran for an 8-episode series on the BBC in 2011, finished on a cliff-hanger, and was then (wisely) cancelled.
