One local thrift store in my area has used paperbacks for ten cents. Most thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.) have them for fifty cents to a dollar.
But best sellers that are more than a few months old are pretty easy to find at my local used book store for half the cover price or less -- paperback or hard cover.
