The updates are as much as to patch known zero day exploits in the wild, as they are to deliver new features, functions, and capabilities to the OS.
As such, I don't object to their updates. OTOH, Verizon, and the other carriers, with their policy of "No OS updates, under any circumstances" is abhorrent, unethical, immoral, and should result in a fine of at least one googol dollars, United States currency.
