OK, let's sum it up, this is what I found on Paperwhite 2, FW 5.8.5:
- there's an issue in running python (and some other code) from KUAL in the most recent OS versions (5.8.5 and up).
- BUT - not everyone reports it, because when you run these scripts (Librarian Sync, parts of Screen Savers hack like "Process images in Staging directory" etc.) from KINDLET version of KUAL, they all work as expected. The only problem is BOOKLET KUAL version.
