Most of the bug fixes in firmware v4.1.7729 were aimed at reducing the battery problems. The same will probably be the case for the next as well. Kobo are looking at the problems with the cover, but I have no idea how it is going.

In the meantime, I think you will have a lot less problems if you can close the cover so that the right hands side touches the screen first. This is where the magnet for the sleep switch is but the the design means that the left side is more likely to touch the screen before the sleep is triggered.
