Can't sideload on Kindle Fire HD 8

Hi! I just had to replace a second generation Kindle Fire HD 7 before its time thanks to my 6-year old. Plugged in my new Kindle Fire HD 8 to sideload some books with the current Calibre and get a folder creation error:

calibre, version 2.71.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device
Failed to create folder: hr=2147500037 facility=0 error_code=16389 description: Unspecified error

I'm not sure what the directory structure is supposed to be these days but I kind of expected there to be a Books and a Docs directory parallel with Music, Pictures, etc. but there is not. The "Internal Storage" directory of this device doesn't seem to have a place where it dumps books?

From a cursory examination of this site and the Googlesphere in general I was not able to find any information about sideloading books on this relatively new device -- just a lot of talk about sideloading apps. Has anyone had experience with this? Am I seeing an error that all Kindle Fire HD 8 owners are seeing or is this unique to special ol' me?
