It doesn't just make the e-reading world better. It makes the e-reading world usable. Without calibre (and, to be brutally honest, Alf's plugins) I wouldn't even have so many ebooks; I'd be using an e-reader to read public domain/drm-free books only, and I probably would have stopped reading genre fiction except for the very best few books.
Once in a while I make a small donation, as I do with many other open source software I use a lot.
