If you get a chance (and haven't done so already), try to find a few issues of Alan Moore's graphic series,
Tomorrow Stories. They featured various "heroes" each with their own continuing tales. My personal favorites were the Jack B. Quick stories, a series Moore co-created with Kevin Nowlan. Jack was a young genius who lived on a farm and was always getting into trouble because of his inventions.
