Good topic.

After much practice (decades) I find that my reading rate varies according to:

1) the difficulty of the subject
2) and whether familiarity with that difficult subject helps me understand more quickly.
3) how the fiction or non-fiction is organized
4) how I feel. a) really interested or not, b) lots of energy or not, c) etc.

So I have in effect an automatic governor of my speed and don't really pay attention any more to how many pages OR books I read in a day.
