You can go into the Accessibility settings and set it so you just have to rest your finger on the button to unlock. For me, if anything, it's more convenient, not less. I've updated both phone and iPad (not immediately, but a little while after release), and haven't run into trouble yet. My third party cables are still working with my phone.
