Saving your wifi password on your Kindle is not equivalent to giving it to Amazon. If you turn that checkbox off, the Kindle will still remember the wifi passwords of every router it talks to: it just won't sync it up to Amazon so that all your other Kindles will automatically know the password.

I, too, find this a dubious gain for a huge security loss, and it's totally useless for the wifi router you normally connect to Amazon through (since it needs your wifi router password to connect to Amazon at all), so I turn the checkbox off, but I've only had to teach each Kindle the wifi password once.
