Thanks for the prompt responses - much appreciated.

I'll work my way through some of the links. One thing I've already spotted is how quickly Calibre is developing: new releases are tumbling out all the time. I've seen examples of where a thread with multiple pages started with a particular query, and by the time it closed a few pages later, several new releases had been issued along the way which fixed the problem. As a result when I search for a problem similar to my own, I read through multiple posts only to find that that problem has already been cured and I only happen to share a few symptoms with it.

Is there such a thing as over-supported software where the developers are too responsive to users' needs?
