When Amazon sells a Kindle it really is attempting to lock the buyer into buying books only from Amazon. Yes, members of MR know that there are other options, but I'm willing to bet that most Kindle buyers believe they are able to buy only from Amazon. I don't want to add to Amazon's sales statistics which Amazon will use to browbeat publishers to do what Amazon wants.

I think you are underestimating the intelligence of Kindle buyers.
Some, at the very beginning, may think that, but a person who buys a Kindle is first and foremost a reader. (with the exception of those who buy it just because you-know-who has one)
That being said, it doesn't take any of us long to find mobileread, feedbooks, fictionwise, amazon discussions page, you name it. We're not Amazon's robots.
