Nate, it isn't that there aren't ways to convert between formats and Kovid's Calibre is great. (BTW, I don't want to convert from ePub to Mobi; if anything, it would be the opposite.)

Consequently, I will not buy pbooks or ebooks from Amazon or Amazon-controlled/owned companies. I would rather pay a little more to someone else or simply pass on a book.

When Amazon sells a Kindle it really is attempting to lock the buyer into buying books only from Amazon. Yes, members of MR know that there are other options, but I'm willing to bet that most Kindle buyers believe they are able to buy only from Amazon. I don't want to add to Amazon's sales statistics which Amazon will use to browbeat publishers to do what Amazon wants.
