These are all outside of the box, mixing genre elements, and have both mainstream ideas and more creative ideas. Kambayashi's work is the most intellectual of the bunch, I'd say, particularly the second book in his series I noted. (There is a third book in that Yukikaze series, but it hasn't been released in English.)
I've heard that Haruki Murakami has some real mind-benders, as well.
