No, the book isn't childish or girlish. It's been almost 30 years since I read it, but I remember coming away with this thought:
In the book, the narrator talks about how his father read him "The Princess Bride" as a kid, and later he realized his father had skipped around and only read him "the good parts," skipping all the stuff about politics, economics, dry commentary, etc.
The movie is like "the good parts" version, and the father was a wise man to skip the rest :-)
