Well, OP is from the US judging from his profile -- considering the extremely poor distribution Kobo ereaders have in the States it makes sense that it's the first country to have the Glo HD actually sold out. But the US is not Kobo's main market. The readers are sold in many other countries, and there not only online but in bookshops and/or consumer electronics stores as well, with much bigger stocks available. If they were planning the release of an update to the Glo HD in the (near?) future, it would make sense that they wait to announce it officially until they can manage to sell off the remaining devices that are available in these countries -- maybe with a well-timed Christmas sale? -- and then officially announce that it's discontinued and they'll be coming out with a new device. Otherwise most people would wait.

I can only speak for Italy, but I live in a medium-sized city here and there's at least 6 different stores I can think of where you can go and buy Kobo eReaders. Up until last week, I was still seeing the Glo HD on sale in bookstores, though I'm noticing now that it seems to not be available anymore on Feltrinelli's website (major bookstore chain affiliated with Kobo), and in the other affiliated one, Mondadori, it's still available full price but with a promo that gives you the sleep cover for free if you buy one. In both cases, you have to search for it -- the ones on the front page are the Aura 2nd edition, H2O and One.
