I'm not any sort of android expert, however in my experience 4.4 is more compatible with latest apps, however the biggest advantage I see is in the way memory is handled. 4.0 makes internal memory separate areas for apps and data with no ability to adjust. You soon run out of app space and move 2 sd card is not supported by all apps.

4.4 treats all internal memory as app and data space, so no need to do as much moving apps to sd card. In my case I like to use my sd card for content only and keep my apps on the device internal memory.

That being said, I only ran into app storage issues on my i86. I think the n96 has some sort of work-around or this was fixed in later 4.0 versions, as the stock android 4.0.4 seems to not have the separate spaces for apps and data, although I'd still like a more up to date android version.
