Performance within calibre isn't a problem for me too (up to now). I leave big files outside calibre. This works with links perfect for me.

(I like calibre very much but to be honest, I can't imagine to manage huge audio, pictures or video content and collections within calibre in a way I like to use it. For these cases I have better solutions - but more often I integrate a "cross over" access via calibre.)
My _Media library is News & CA broadcasts, with transcripts, commentary, comparative analysis etc - for 'research' purposes - dry as dust stuff. My entertainment media, photos etc are elsewhere, Quodlibet for Music, iMatch for Photos - don't have many movies etc some are in calibre if I have the book.

Care to elaborate. You've probably see this Calibre and Evernote

Here's a trick you might like - you can add a Saved Windows Search (the search criteria) as a book. If you add actual books whose content satisfies the search criteria they will be there when you view the SEARCH_MS format. If you drag the list into the Drop Search Results PI you can easily refresh a Reading List.
