Apart from all the extra code to handle the lights, Kobo also changed a lot of backend stuff. They rebuilt the on-line library earlier in the year, and the sync code had to be changed to match. This hadn't been released to the other devices before the Aura ONE was released. And I have run the same firmware on all my Kobo ereaders. I did see variations of the battery usage that have been seen on the Aura ONE.
