I took it to the store (W H Smith), they accepted that it was faulty. They didn't have a replacement Glo HD, and since I wanted an e-reader for a trip in a weeks time, they showed me that it can be charged if you hold the plug at a certain angle to the socket, and said I could send it off to Kobo myself, freepost, with a signed from from the store saying faulty.
Pretty helpful. No idea how long Kobo will take to replace it, or whether it'll be a Glo or Aura. But I can use my phone as a reader, Moto G 3rd Gen, pretty good screen, but the battery life is tiny by comparison with an e-ink reader.
