Shipping for non-Prime orders is definitely slower, there was a study released in February that reported that.

I think that support experience was simply a bad support rep. Ignoring half of what you said, then saying things like that isn't normal even for places with bad support in general. (I mean, that type of thing would surprise me even from Comcast. They're usually polite, even if Comcast won't let them do anything to actually help you half the time.)
