It can be done, yes - but you should not do it.

The Kobo Aura One has soldered on memory. The recovery partition (unmodified) is your only chance of recovery in case things stop working altogether. If you mess with this partition and goof it up, you have a very nice looking doorstop...

If you want to default to a more recent firmware, download that firmware (direct download links you can find in this forum), keep that file around, and then just copy it over USB whenever you had to factory reset.
