Angry Glo HD USB port flaky

Bought a glo hd earlier this year. A month or so ago started to have trouble connecting to power adapter or pc - the connection would break and then come back. I switched to the USB cable provided with the reader, it seemed to work better, but now it's almost completely stopped working.

Anyone else had this problem?

I bought it from a W H Smith in the UK, wondering whether to take it back there or contact Kobo directly. I don't really want to send it in for repair, since I don't have a backup. Maybe I should have bought a small tablet instead of the Glo HD.
