I'm afraid the problem is a bit more vicious than just the sync thing.
This noon, I was reading and started at 76% battery. A few minutes (approx. 10) after starting, I routinely checked the battery level, to see if it was holding.
Battery was down to 64%.

There's NO way a single process would use 12% battery in ten minutes, no matter how intensive, on such a machine. It was also not in the process of synching and being stuck.

So, either the hardware is faulty, or the software part for reporting percentages was written with the left foot.
But sync is only one of multiple possible causes for that annoying bug.
