This week's free download is Palestrina's 1572 motet 'Tribularer, si nescirem'. The track is from a recent recording by the Magnificat choir and director Philip Cave, called Scattered Ashes. The disc explores the influence of radical Dominican friar Savonarola on the music of his time, and includes works by Josquin des Prez, Orlando Lassus and William Byrd.
'Cave shapes poised, subtly expressive and finely balanced readings' writes Kate Bolton-Porciatti. 'His measured tempos reflect the predominantly contemplative tone of these works.
The website name has "Classical" in it, but let me give you a "heads-up": this song, to my untrained ear, doesn't sound very classical. It sounds like a mixture of singing from monks of the Middle Ages with New Age music of the 1990's.
