Beg to differ. I care about that distinction, and STILL manage to enjoy historical fiction. But that's because I don't mind doing my own homework to check an author's work--fiction or non- (if I feel compelled to verify). I don't need an imaginary (and quite worthless) guarantee of authenticity for the historical aspects of a
novel. It's a
novel, not a textbook (which quite often, are no more prone to sustained levels accuracy than many novels are).
I think it's a mistake to think of Historical Fiction (merely a label like any other [sub]genre label, by the way) as being "fictionalized history". It's fiction ... with a historical setting. No more/no less.
I don't care if people don't "like" it. There's lots of subgenres I don't care for. But let's stop pretending this particular "
label that helps people find fiction they enjoy" is anything to stress over. Let alone be considered "dangerous."
