Yes, all those things are true, and in that case, if the prior publisher info was really hard to find, I personally think a polite question about self-pub status would be warranted.

My point is just that often (most of the time, probably, given that most/all of us try to abide by the self-pub rules) a couple of easy clicks WILL provide info on a prior traditional publisher. I'm not asking for the "doubter" to do tons of research, but just to assume that the poster is abiding by the rules, rather than the reverse, and at least do the easy clicks themselves if they doubt the status. Then if no obvious prior traditional publisher turns up, by all means ask - we all make mistakes from time to time. JMTCW for something that would IMO make this a friendlier thread.
