Daybreak is actually the 1st in a not-quite-series, featuring the Icelandic detective duo of Birkir Li Hinriksson (a naturalized Icelandic citizen who was formerly a Vietnamese-Chinese child refugee) and Gunnar Marķusson (a native Icelander with recent partial German ancestry), for which there was a second book written eventually. It was popular enough in Iceland to be turned into a TV miniseries.

I bought and read both of the books a while ago, and quite liked and would recommend them, although I think the 2nd is somewhat better than the 1st, and the respective cases and character bits can be read standalone.
