I ran through 5 or 6 covers for my Touch, and had basically anything ever created, until I found the one I described. When I got the Paperwhite, I got one of those for that reader as well.
My KPW1 cover came from eBay Germany as well.

I wanted one I could remove my reader from easily, and like you say, the only covers widely available any more are the slim fit style with the metal piece. I don't want that metal piece.

I didn't like it either when I tried it, not to mention the flaps/clasps. I also don't want any stand features (it makes the cover floppy), stylus holders (I don't use one), and no inserts for cards or anything (they're in the way when holding the reader).
The Gecko-cover is basically what I want, but that company just doesn't listen.
It has had numerous complaints over the years that, after some time, the bezel coverings get a bit looser. That's logical. It just happens. When it does however, you tend to start to slowly slide the reader out of the cover when holding it with your right hand. At best, it sits askew all the time. (I remember that HarryT had an H2O and/or a T68 with a Gecko cover that had this problem.)
If they'd just put that flap on the left, that folds under the reader and then sticks to the inside of the back of the cover with velcro, the entire problem would be solved.
