I get the argument that you can just turn the splash screen off if you don't like the new one.
For me though it's not just that I don't like the new one, but that I really liked the old one. When it first appeared some time back, my reaction was, "Wow, that's cool!" My first reaction when this new one appeared was, "Argh, that's ugly. Did I break something?"
If this is what Kovid, likes, then it is. I'll turn off the splash screen on the computer I just installed, and I'll probably never update the computers that have the old version. Calibre reached the "no significant bugs or feature gaps" for me several years ago -- it's an awesome tool that does everything I want, so updates are just gilding the lily anyway.
For me. They undoubtedly bring new features that are useful for others.
