I don't think it's the random image that upsets Kindle users, it's the fact that it's a random selection from a limited Amazon-selected set of images - not a set of their own choosing.
I think 'cover of current book' is also a popular choice which is why many Kindle owners jailbreak and apply the relevant screensaver hack.
