Kindle 1 not connecting to Store

It was working fine a few months ago, but lately it has been unable to connect to the store or run experimental browser. The signal strength is at 4 or 5 bars, once it appears to 'connect', which takes a few minutes. Maybe it needs a new battery? I have to charge it every couple of weeks even though I turn it off. But it still fails to connect when plugged in.

There are various diagnostic screens that are accessible from Settngs. 'Loop back test' fails for what that is worth. The 611 page shows 'Not Avail' for WAN Access statuses. Wonder if Sprint pulled the plug?

Anyway I thought I'd check to see if anyone has had the same issue with a Kindle 1, or lack thereof.
