Okay, I went ahead and tried it myself. I just downloaded an epub3 through ADE 1.7 and successfully deDRMed it through calibre. And I've had a look at the content.opf file to confirm that it really is epub3. Yay! Bye bye Kobo Desktop, and good riddance!
