To add a little stern recordkeeping to a thread that has already had some wild swings of mood, here is some historical fiction that would have to be thrown out with the bathwater, if we were to abandon the game altogether. I have limited myself to books and serials that were written by authors who were not alive during the time concerned, even as an infant:

1. War and Peace by Tolstoy

—Actually, I'll stop at one. I had Dumas, Dickens, Hugo, Faulkner, Stevenson, George Eliot, Hawthorne, and Charlotte Brontė lined up on the top of my head, but any rule that excludes War and Peace is a rule to toss. You may as well say the whole game of fiction should be abandoned.
