My bad !!!
I used a couple of proxies, so a banned IP/range wasn't the issue. I was using Firefox with an add-on which strips or obfuscates referrers called
Smart Referrer enabled.
I'm not certain how that affected Chrome or Edge, because I don't use them much and so they're really just in the "out-of-box" configuration. What probably happened was that I was having no joy with FF, opened other browsers and copied

into the address bar, so it looked like a direct hit with no mobileread.com referrer.
Add-on disabled. Download and MD5 check are fine.
