Seriously: Many of the same criticisms can be leveled at any genre - especially the type of reading YOU or I love.

THANK YOU.
I read (and write) serious, high-minded academic crap far too much. To relax, I usually don't read anything that could be considered literature; mysteries, SF, romance, spy-action and sometimes horror, although they just keep me up at night lately.
Anyway, the one thing that gets potshots routinely is the romance reading. I have a friend who writes them (and makes some money doing so) and gets ridiculous abuse. Nobody asks mystery writers "so, do you kill people to research the books, wink wink, nudge nudge?"
And I shy far away from allegations of sexism in general, but I don't find it coincidental that the genre that gets the most sneering is the one that is 98% written and read by women.
