That's my biggest beef, too. When reading one-handed on a touch-screen, my thumb is either blocking a portion of the screen, or traveling too far if it's not. A button eliminates both unsatisfactory situations.
That's why I've taken to using a bluetooth media remote to turn pages when reading on my tablet. No thumb travel, no screen blockage, no screen touching whatsoever. Handy on a treadmill, too.
