As far as I can tell, CC is not involved.

Using CC V5.1.5.2, I get the failure you describe with calibre V2.65 and a library containing no custom columns. If I add a text-type custom column to that library then it works, even if the column contains no data. A calibre patched to fix the problem (the fix is in calibre's source branch) works in both cases.
