After that (you may have to reboot), under Settings->Reading Settings, there should now be a checkbox labelled "Show header and footer" that you can uncheck. Once done, books should use up the entire screen. It certainly works for kepubs, although I don't know if it works with regular epubs since I don't use those. No patching required!
I think it would be better to use Notepad++ (if you use Windows) as I can say it's very good.
