I decided it needs to be a "proper" road trip, and as I know little to nothing about Australia, despite my sister living there, I am going with In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. There are some books in the list that I will be adding to my TBR list anyway, including the Shackleton and the Steinbeck particularly.
