Here is some background on this.
A little over a year ago Amazon released KFX as a new e-book format in conjunction with the Enhanced Typesetting feature. Since then KFX has gradually become the primary e-book format in use for newer Kindle apps and devices. All books delivered by Amazon in KFX format are DRM-protected with a strong encryption scheme that has not yet been cracked. Without access to unencrypted KFX books there is no reason to implement conversion to other formats.
One reason for the lack of KFX support is that there exist simple workarounds that allow access to the older KF8 and MOBI formats already supported by calibre and the DRM Tools. Another reason is that it is known that, once decrypted, the contents of a KFX book will be inferior the the older KF8 format in respect to archival and convertibility.
If, at some point in the future, access to the older formats becomes more difficult then I believe that the effort will be made to better support KFX. But that day may never come.
